In the spinal cord the myelin sheath is formed by the oligodendroglia cells, and by the Schwann cells outside the spinal cord. Myelination begins at about 4th month of fetal life. Schwann cells wrap themselves around the axons thus forming the neurilemma sheath. The tracts in the nervous system become myelinated at about the time they start to function.
