Musculoskeletal System

The skeletal system and the muscular system develop from the mesodermal germ layer.
The somites, series of mesodermal tissue blocks, differentiate into sclerotome ventromedially and dermomyotome dorsolaterally. The sclerotome cells form the embryonic connective tissue mesenchyme. These cells surround the notochord and neural tube and give rise to the vertebral column, ribs and associated ligaments. The dermomyotome gives rise to the dermis and the intrinsic back muscles.
